Yale Young Global Scholar

This summer, Kate Trowbridge ’19 participated in The Yale Young Global Scholars Program (YYGS), a summer academic enrichment and leadership program that brings together outstanding high school students from around the world for intensive two-week sessions on Yale’s campus. There she had the chance conduct research, including her favorite project, where she studied how a Proteolysis-Targeting Chimeras molecule could be synthetically attached to a keratinase molecule in order to degrade a prion, specifically the PrPSc prion.

„The Yale Young Global Scholars was an amazing experience. I met so many people from all over the world and who had very different lives in comparison to mine,“ she said. „I really enjoyed the research because it allowed me to really thoroughly research, understand, and design a solution to problems involving this prion.“

Yale Summer Institute for the Gifted Residential Program

Speaking of Yale, this summer Kate Yuan ’22 also spent time on the New Haven campus as part of the Summer Institute for the Gifted Residential Program. There she learned more about DNA Diagnostics and Medical Microbiology and even had the chance to draft a grant proposal for research of the gene, Lin28a, and its effects on mice and their regenerative abilities.

A Record of Success

On Tuesday, the Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving team kicked off their season with a home opener in the Steward Family Aquatic Center and William R. Orthwein Sr. Pool, where Hunter Grannum ’19 saw his record change on the record board for the first time. Last season, Hunter broke the MICDS School and pool diving record for most points scored during a meet. Way to go, Hunter!

Field Hockey Stars

Congratulations to seven MICDS student athletes—Reagan Calcari ’20, Mia Duchars ’20, Lily Baker ’21, Brecken Calcari ’22, Anna Lochhead, Kendall Curry ’23 and Ella Etherington ’24—who, with their St. Louis Gateway U14 and U16 teams, placed 5th at the U.S. Field Hockey National Club Championships in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in July.

As a result of these teams’ year long efforts and tournaments, theU.S. Field Hockey August 2018 rankings named their Gateway U14 team 3rd in the nation and U16 2nd in the nation.

Meanwhile, Mia Duchars ’20 was also recently chosen by Max Field Hockey to be the preseason player of the year for Missouri. She was also on the Max Field Hockey 2018 preseason All-American watch list. Way to go, Mia!

Even more field hockey kudos go to Kate Oliver `22, who participated in the Junior Olympics a few weeks ago, and her team won. Quite an achievement!
