Summer Camps Flourish at MICDS

Summer at MICDS is a busy place! While it operates at a different pace than during the school year, it’s a bustling hub of activities for campers of all ages. The campus spaces come alive with learning, laughter, and memory-making through Camp Pegasus, Eliot Summer Academy, and STL Sports Camps.

Camp Pegasus

Camp Pegasus is a great way to kick off the summer in style. With campers ranging in age from rising kindergarteners to rising sixth graders, expert counselors help campers explore an exciting array of activities in swimming, arts and crafts, technology, science, sports, and games. They are busy moving through adventures and summertime fun, only pausing for a delicious lunch in the dining hall before they are on to their next session.

For older campers, rising seventh through 10th graders enjoy Summer Stock, a theater-specific program focused on acting skills, production assistance, and performance. The program is open to new and experienced actors and tech crew and welcomes campers interested solely in the technical side of theater.

This year, Camp Pegasus added the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) for rising seventh through 10th graders. YLI’s summer program empowers young leaders to harness and develop the skills and confidence needed to positively impact their community and prepare for the next steps in their education and beyond. The curriculum includes interactive workshops, guest speakers, and hands-on leadership experiences.

This year, 1,247 Pegasus campers enjoyed six weeks of memories, friendship, learning, and fun thanks to the efforts of Middle School Arts Teacher, Dean & Camp Director Charlotte Dougherty, Middle School Arts Teacher Tim Storey, Aquatics Director Khannie Dastgah, and more than 80 staff members.

Eliot Summer Academy

Named after William Greenleaf Eliot, one of our School’s founders and visionary thinkers, Eliot Summer Academy challenges middle and high school students with various academic and enrichment courses, stretching their limits in and out of the classroom. Classes offered through Eliot Summer Academy are perfect for summer review or enrichment.

Review courses help students transition between coursework levels and allow them to redo work, catch up, or make up a course. Enrichment courses like Grammar Boost offer something new and may help students prepare for the next school year.

Upper School Learning Specialist & Director of Eliot Summer Academy Sam Cummins and many MICDS teachers led nearly 120 students through thoughtful sessions in reading, science, and math. With access to the Global Online Academy, students also enjoyed classes such as architecture, college essay writing, international relations, and more. Over 90% of our new, incoming Upper School students participated.

STL Sports Camps

To get maximum use of our athletic facilities during the summer months, our high-energy STL Sports Camps, run independently by coaches, keep athletes moving throughout the summer. Campers focus on developing skills and improving technique, and all athletes train in MICDS’ state-of-the-art athletic facilities to gain an even greater competitive edge. STL Sports Camps offers a program for every athlete and gives campers a taste of playing for an elite team.

This year, 617 campers participated in 11 sports (including Pickleball!) over nine weeks. Thank you to Operations Administrative Assistant & Director of Summer Sports Camps Justin French and our outstanding coaches for creating active fun over the summer.
