Head of Lower School Amy Scheer Speaks at Fourth Grade Recognition Day
At our annual Fourth Grade Recognition Day held during the last week of school, Head of Lower School Amy Scheer addressed fourth graders and their families one last time before their transition into Middle School at MICDS. Here are her remarks.
Good morning, Fourth Grade. This morning, we are here celebrating you, a remarkable group of students who are about to embark on a new adventure. (Although the adventure is still a couple of months away from now after a relaxing summer, and just down the hall from the Fourth Grade homerooms.) I should also add that we are grateful that it’s just down the hall because that gives us the chance to continue to see your smiling faces and be a part of your MICDS journey.
There are so many things we want to say to you, but I’ll focus on sharing the many compliments I heard about your class during your time in Beasley: Kind, compassionate, thoughtful, curious, and capable. These are just some of the adjectives that your teachers used to describe your class collectively. You truly are a remarkable group. The song Glorious that you just shared with the audience is a fitting song for your recognition. Since your first days on campus, you have been a very collaborative and inclusive group of students. You each bring so many strengths and unique qualities to your class as a whole. As the song states:
It’s like a symphony
Just keep listening
And pretty soon you’ll start
To figure out your part
Everyone plays a piece
You have always known that you are better together, and that each of you has a voice to share. Your kindness and encouragement of each other, even through the difficult pandemic approaches to keep you in school, as you so kindly reminded us in your memories, has always been strong. It makes me happy to know that you have fond memories of that time, which was definitely a challenge for everyone.
Your ability to make the most of struggles is one of your greatest strengths, and I want you to know that we are going to miss you very much. We will still be here for you if you are ever uncertain and could use some encouragement. You will have just as many adults who care about you in the Middle School as you did in Beasley, but we are all still here to champion you as well.
As you move on to Middle School, I want you to remember the impact you had here in Beasley. Your kindness and empathy have made our school a better place, and I am confident that you will continue to spread these wonderful qualities wherever you go. Middle School will bring new challenges and opportunities, but I know that you are ready to face them with the same grace and generosity that you have shown here in the Lower School.
These moments of songs, memories, and poetry this morning have given us a small glimpse into the growth that you have made. As you begin this next phase of your journey at MICDS, I hope that you will remember that each of you has contributed to what makes the Class of 2032 special and unique. Congratulations to each and every one of you. We are so proud of you, and we can’t wait to see all the wonderful things you will accomplish in Middle School and beyond. Remember, your kindness is your superpower. Keep using it to make the world and your school a better place.
