Welcome!
Welcome to “Inside MICDS”, the School’s new blog! Here at MICDS, we know that, as parents, sometimes you have questions. And we’re hoping we can help answer some of those questions here—questions about our School community, our leadership, how we live out our Mission, our most deeply held values, our disciplinary process, our rigorous curriculum, college admissions, what our teachers are up to and our outstanding co-curricular programs.
You might also have other questions, like, how do I get my picky 1st grader to eat what’s on the lunch menu; or, what happens if my child hits a bump in the road, either with a teacher or a classmate; or, how do I respond as a parent when my child experiences a bad grade on an assignment.
Here at MICDS, many of us are parents ourselves, and even for those of us who aren’t, we are educators—and we get it. We know, the parenting struggle is real.
That’s what this blog is all about really, perspectives from myriad and diverse voices here at MICDS who, together, are sharing a “catch all” for parents who are just looking to find ways to do the most important job you will ever do—be parents. You’ll hear from administrators, teachers, coaches and MICDS parents like you. While most of the blog posts will address areas that relate specifically to parenting your child through the MICDS experience, we hope the content on this blog might even transcend this 100-acre campus and relate universally to busy parents everywhere.
As we navigate some of the tricky waters of parenting through these resources, please know that we don’t claim to have all the answers. In fact, that’s one of the most important parts of the MICDS experience—that we are always innovating. pushing ourselves to learn best practices and be our best selves.
This year, we have encouraged all MICDS parents to read Julie Lythcott-Haims’ book, How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid For Success. This book is a wonderful resource, and in some of these blogs, we will reflect on this text, using it as a guide as we uplift and strengthen our Parent/School Partnership. If you haven’t already read the book, please do so. Copies can be found in the MICDS bookstore for added convenience.
Here at MICDS, our Mission mandates that we prepare compassionate men and women to lead lives of purpose and service. As you know, we are a Mission-driven School, and we are working diligently to ensure we live out that Mission. We are glad you have chosen to join us in this endeavor, and we look forward to seeing how this blog will support that collaborative effort. Thank you for taking the time to read it, and we hope you will find this resource helpful as you engage in the most difficult and most important pursuit of your life—parenthood.
