Beasley Students Showcase Classroom and Athletic Skills at Reading, Writing, and Running, Too!

The Friday before spring break is always a day to look forward to in the Lower School. That is the day that Reading, Writing, and Running Day, Too! returns, and students celebrate community and family while demonstrating the literacy skills they’ve learned throughout the year. Following a picnic lunch, family members visited their students in their classrooms where they read stories. “It’s a way to celebrate literacy development and the active role that our students take in their learning,” said Amy Scheer, Head of Lower School. “For me, the best part of the day is seeing the pride the students take in showing their guests how much they have grown in reading and writing.”

Following lunch and classroom activities, students and their families moved to the McDonnell Athletic Center. “This year we had three new activities: the chicken noodle relay, the western relay, and the ice cream cone relay,” said Sue Orlando, Lower School PE Teacher. Students practiced teamwork with those activities in addition to the pizza box relay, dice game relay, and fishing relay. “The kids love the different relays,” said Orlando. “The relays we do are only done on Reading, Writing, and Running Day, so they are a one-time-a-year thing!”

Celebrating all the progress that Lower School students have made through the year is a lot of fun. Orlando loves the activities and seeing the students celebrate with their families. “The best part of the day is watching the children’s faces light up with BIG smiles as they interact with their classmates while participating in each activity!” she said. Be it working together as a school or on a smaller scale as a relay team, Beasley students do a wonderful job of living the MICDS mission. “The event isn’t about winning but about working together as a team to find success,” Scheer said. Orlando feels the same way: “The most important part of the day is coming together as an entire school and enjoying our community working together as one!”
