Story and photos by Gio Bucci ’28
Character Creation was a creative class that was offered during Winter Term. The students were focused on learning and getting better at expressing themselves through art. Middle School Art Teacher Mrs. Zimmer did a very good job of giving the students confidence and guidance without drawing for them so they could succeed on their own.
In Character Creation, the students spent time creating works of art inspired by the artist Ten Hundred. They did this by using one of their yearbook photos as inspiration and adding their creative touches to it to portray how they see themselves and their physical characteristics through artistic details. The process they were using was to begin with basic shapes and add more detail as they went through the process. Students said they would recommend this activity to others because they got to learn how to create faces which would help with future art classes. Student Asa Roberts ’28 said, “The class helps me because it makes me use my creative mindset to create different visuals of abstract creations. I have never been so attentive to detail when creating art, and this class has helped me understand the importance of attention to detail.” The students seemed extremely happy about choosing this class because they said they learned things that they wouldn’t learn in other classes.
This class seemed like it would be a benefit to everybody and I would recommend it to anyone 100% because not only was it helping the students who were enrolled to learn new skills, but I also learned just by watching them work.
