Ten Upper School students recently competed in the Parkway West Speech and Debate Invitational, where they went up against 22 schools and more than 600 students in various competitions. Representing MICDS were two Lincoln-Douglas debaters, two teams of two contestants each who competed in Varsity Public Forum Debate and two teams with two participants each who competed in Novice Public Forum Debate. With a team of seven underclassmen, MICDS was competitive and won 13 rounds.
In addition, Jonah Zacks made it to the quarterfinals and was ranked 6th out of more than 40 Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debaters. He was named and given an award at the ceremony for his overall ranking after five rounds of debate.
“The future is bright for the Debate Club because there are many underclassmen who are serious students and willing to research and practice their craft. In addition, the upperclassmen are great role models and mentors to the younger students learning the nuisances of debate,” said Upper School History Teacher and Debate Coach Andy Cox.
