Last Friday first-grade students got cozy, cuddled up, and spent the day camped out with their pillows and blankets for a surprise “Sleep Day.” Jenn Gillis, First Grade Homeroom Teacher, explains that Sleep Day has been a special annual event in first grade for many years. “It is a little bit of a surprise,” she said. Students find out the night before, and then they are very surprised when they arrive to find the room dark and ready for “sleeping.”
“We work so hard to learn how to read in first grade and having a day to relax, take a little more time, read for as long as we want, have special breakfast snacks, and use our flashlights to read in the dark feels like a great culmination and celebration of our year and our growth,” Gillis said.
