Last Friday, while Middle and Upper School students had an asynchronous learning day off campus, our Beasley friends spread their wings for a Lower School Community Day. Activities ranged from obstacle-coursing their way through the American Heart Association’s Kid Heart Challenge, going on art walks, and bubble dancing to creating games in the Upper School Maker Space, a picnic lunch, and a drumming demonstration on the playground.
In addition, our 4th graders enjoyed tours of the Middle School in preparation for next year, and all Lower School students enjoyed a virtual visit with guest artist and science illustrator Natalia Rojas.
Leading up to Community Day, students enjoyed a Spirit Week filled with a different theme each day, including Hat Day, Mismatch Day, Rainbow Day, Crazy Hair Day, and Rams Spirit Day.
To top it off, the annual Kids Heart Challenge had another banner year and raised a stunning $28,400 for the American Heart Association. MICDS has participated in this program for the past 33 years, and Lower School PE Teachers Susan Orlando and Jim Lohr express their deepest thanks for the donations to help fight heart disease and stroke.
A big thanks also to Upper School Math and Computer Science Teacher Janet Purdy, Coordinator of Pedagogical Innovation Elizabeth Helfant, and Upper School Theater Technical Director, Maker and Robotics Coordinator & Science Teacher Brian Purlee for planning and leading our third graders in a Maker Space project in the Upper School STEM building. Everyone had so much fun!
