Most of us are familiar with the idea of « student council » or STUCO. After a brief campaign season with posters and speeches, students elect their peers to serve a one-year term. The tradition continues in Middle School, but faculty moderators Jason Roberts and Kelly Walsh are taking the concept to a new level. Instead of STUCO, these peer-elected student leaders are serving on the MICDS Middle School Community Leadership Council (CLC) and will take ownership of service, communications, and events. The throughline is « community, » and these student leaders are an integral part of helping build camaraderie and connection in the Middle School.
The CLC will be involved in helping plan various community service events, including the Thanksgiving Turkey Train, Pennies for Peru, and various other fundraisers throughout the year. The team will also work on Middle School communications including Monday Morning Announcements and the CLC bulletin board located outside of the choir room and South Gym. Finally, the group will help plan Middle School meetings, the annual talent show, and the Spring Fling.
Before the election, each candidate prepared a one-minute speech to their class on why they would like to be considered. Each candidate also created a digital flyer on either Google Slides or Adobe Spark. Speeches and flyers were reviewed and approved by Class Deans one week prior to elections, which were held for fifth, sixth, and seventh grades at the beginning of October. The eighth-grade team was elected earlier in the year, in time to help Roberts and Walsh announce the new program at the first Middle School Meeting.
Congratulations to all of our elected Middle School student leaders, and best wishes for a successful year!
