Rams Get Crafty in the Makerspace

Story and Photos by Drew Mills ’28

Fifth and sixth graders were working on building things out of materials found in the maker space room for Winter Term. The maker space is a great space to learn how to craft things using many different materials and is located near the science wing in the basement of Danforth Hall. The students were getting very crafty with the cool sculptures and things that they were making.

Charlie Miller ’30 was building a sign for his grandpa’s farm. He said, “I’ve loved to make things ever since I can remember, and it’s a way to express myself.” Bryce Craig ’30 and Bentley Maurer ’30 were working on a beautiful hammer, and both students commented that they were having a lot of fun in the Maker class.

Parker Winegrad ’30 was building slide-on shoes for his feet using styrofoam, plastic, and tape. “I’m going to walk in style with them,” said Winegrad. He liked working with the material and the space. He said this class was very dangerous but super fun.

Nicholas Menneke, Middle School PE Teacher, Everett Goldberg, Teacher and Strength and Conditioning Coach, D’Antay Mayes, Middle School History Teacher and Branson Lawrence, Middle School Science Teacher/Maker & Robotics Coordinator, were the instructors for this class. Despite the danger, the teachers were making sure it was safe by keeping everyone organized and making sure the students were using the tools and saws correctly.
