From now through the end of the school year, the MICDS community can enjoy an array of Upper School student artworks on the walls of Messing Gallery. From paintings and drawings to digital design and multimedia video productions, there is art in all forms to examine, explore, and interpret.
Upper School Arts Teacher Dr. Kevin Slivka explained that the exhibit is showcased in three sections:
Drawing 210: Synthesis of Elements
Students continued drawing media framed through the lens of the Natural Elements. They created several studies that demonstrated four selected elements: fire, water, earth, and air (atmosphere-storm while utilizing compositional organization and mark-making that corresponds to the concepts).
AP Drawing: Sustained Investigation Selection
Students generated fifteen digital images of artworks and process documentation demonstrating a sustained investigation of an idea through practice, experimentation, and revision.
Painting 310: Mapping: A Series of Works
Students created individualized paths by «mapping» a series of works to explore a single «big idea» or concept, such as relationships, place, home, memory, travel, light, access, power, identity, systems, etc. Students generated a mini-series composed of three thoughtful compositions that are linked and unified and communicate a common statement, idea, or concept through varied expressions.
Slivka shared, «Exhibiting students’ artwork is an opportunity for acknowledging their accomplishments in the areas of ideation, iteration, revision, refinement, and visual communication while also advocating for the arts with the hopes of generating appreciation. The 2D students worked diligently the entire year through creative blocks and persisted in mastering the media. This exhibition only captures a slice of their successes.»
Upper School Arts Teacher Brooke Williams added, «The show is solid. The work on display is a testament to the talent we get to see on a daily basis in the Bryant Arts Center. I am really proud of the variety of student voices in the various media. If you haven’t had a chance to see the show, find time to browse the collection before the end of the school year. You won’t regret it.»
