The MICDS Student Investment Group (SIG) is hard at work this fall, holding planning meetings and offering investment training sessions for new members. On October 19, students had the opportunity to learn from Matt Hall, co-founder and president of Hill Investment Group and author of Odds On: The Making of an Evidence-Based Investor (April 2016). Mr. Hall is Hill Investment Group’s lead on all strategic matters—crafting the firm’s vision, establishing its exceptional standards, and managing key relationships. His visit to MICDS was arranged by Buddy Reisinger ’81, a current MICDS parent and director of Client Development at Hill Investment Group.
Mr. Hall’s book, Odds On describes his role in an ongoing revolution in the investment world: the shift from traditional, sales-driven active management to a model that draws on academic evidence to better serve investors. It is a best-seller on Amazon.com.
Students appreciated the opportunity to have a conversation with Mr. Hall. “The greatest thing I learned was that the best way of investing, and going about problems in general, is to use academic and evidence-based methods that put rationality before ‘gut feelings’ and irrationally,” said Jacob Platin ’17.
Student Investment Group members are: Alaina Baumohl, Alex Donovan, Atri Bhattacharyya, Caleb Pultman, Charlie Smoller, Delaney Schultz, Harrison Thomas, Izzy Critchfield-Jain, Jack Kanterman, Jack Riordan, Jacob Platin, Jamerson Durrill, John Patchett, Johnny Keely, Julia Kemp, Kate Hammersmith, Katie Donovan, Kelly Ye, Max Goldenberg, Max Goldstein, Paige Blanchard, Reed Kearins, Ross Buchman, Ryan Turkin, Siddharth Mehta and Will Coen.
