Senior Selected to Participate in The Young Women’s Institute at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business
Senior Annalisa Goot ’21 was selected to participate in The Young Women’s Institute at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business this past summer. Rising seniors from around the country were selected by the Kelley School of Business Undergraduate Program and corporate partner EY based on academics, extracurricular involvement, and essays.
The program included participation in business, economics, leadership, and presentation workshops taught by the Kelley faculty. The weeklong session culminated with a presentation of a real-world business case study presented to the faculty involving the development of a business plan for a start-up company.
« Going into YWI, I expected that the program would simply extend my previous knowledge of macroeconomics and would introduce me to the foundations of business, » shares Annalisa. « However, I quickly realized that this program was much more. Surrounded by a group of diverse, ambitious, and intellectual young women, we had the opportunity to design a cookie company. Taking into account the marketing, management, finances, and operations of our company, this experience was complex and fascinating in equal parts and made me confident in my decision to pursue a business major in college and work to manage the finances of a real company one day. »
Kate Oliver's Resilience in Field Hockey, Lacrosse, and Math
This week, junior Kate Oliver ’22 is featured in an article on STL Today that showcases her love of math and how that passion has not only impacted her field hockey game but her lacrosse game as well. The math and athletics passions have also led to incredible opportunities. As a sophomore, Oliver verbally committed to playing field hockey at Stanford, but the university recently cut the field hockey program in July. Kate has since embarked on a new search for playing field hockey at a high-level college.
Oliver has also faced challenges due to sports injuries. In her sophomore season, due to an injury, she could only play in eight games but still scored an incredible 17 goals in that short time. She’s also served as goalie on the MICDS lacrosse team to fill a needed role on the team.
No matter what lies ahead, Kate’s resilience, positive attitude, and math and athletic skills will sure add up to a wonderful adventure ahead. Read her story on STL Today here.
Freshman Builds Little Free Library at MICDS
Freshman Virginia Portell ’24 combined her love of reading, community support, and MICDS into a fantastic project. She created a Little Free Library in her quest to earn the Girl Scout Silver Award. Virginia and her grandfather built the Little Free Library so that visitors to campus can grab a quick read or borrow a book.
When asked about what this project meant to her, Virginia shared, « I think that the most important part was that I worked on it with my grandfather, and it was a great way to connect with him more and to incorporate my love of reading and my school. This was the capstone for my Girl Scout Career, and I am so happy that I could have it be put in a place that is special to me. There is also a dog hook under the library on the post, so that if someone has a dog they can hook the leash there so that they can look at the books. »
