In case you missed it, right before heading into spring break, the MICDS Boys Lacrosse team defeated De Smet in a 15-3 victory. Read the recap on STL High School Sports here. Despite graduating 12 seniors from the team last year, the Rams didn’t miss a beat, scoring within the first minute of the game. Standouts mentioned from the team include Joe Condie ’20, Cam Curry ’21, Garrett Christian ’20, PJ Behan ’22, Landon Gelven ’22, Bjorn Sjogren ’22, Luke Auble ’21, Will Kacmarek ’21, Joe Nicpon ’21, Will Giles ’21 and Rahman Almousalli ’20.

Prior to putting the season on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, this victory marked the 94th consecutive win by the Boys Lacrosse program at MICDS. Go Rams!

Faculty Feature: Kay Shares Lessons that his Lacrosse Players are Learning

On March 19, Andy Kay, MICDS Varsity Boys Lacrosse Coach, was quoted in this article in US Lacrosse Magazine, talking about the lessons that are being learned due to coronavirus. A lot has changed since mid-March in St. Louis, Missouri, and beyond. In mid-March, the Rams had just finished their second game with a 2-0 record before being on hold.

Kay commented on how his players are dealing with missing the opportunity of building team camaraderie and living out the many lacrosse traditions that are strong at MICDS. What he says they won’t miss out on are some extremely important life lessons which could be applied to everyone in quarantine at this time: «I do think that the lessons that they learn from this are going to be actually probably more profound than the lessons that we could have taught on the field. These boys are going to have to learn to be selfless in ways that extend well beyond the lines. They’re going to have to really be patient, they’re going to have to learn to deal with conflict in close quarters with people that they love in their own family, they’re going to have to be stewards in their communities, and they’re going to have to be socially responsible. They have a real opportunity to play a role in this.”

Dr. Bob Shaw

Faculty Feature: Congratulations to Dr. Bob Shaw

On March 13, Bob Shaw, JK-12 Science Department Chair and Middle School Science Teacher, successfully defended his dissertation! Congratulations, Dr. Bob Shaw!

Dr. Shaw launched his doctoral research, Using Online Interventions to Address Summer Learning Loss in Rising Sixth-Graders, last April. Read a bit about his dissertation which he shares below:

«Last summer, students that self-selected into doing up to 10 online math lessons and 10 online science lessons over the 11-week summer break did better on average than students that did not do the summer online math and science review lessons.
In fact, as the graph above shows, the more online lessons students did, the higher their achievement on the post-test. Of the students in the Summer Computer-Based Intervention (SCBI) group, 82.4% showed no change or increased their score from the pre-assessment to the post-assessment over the summer, thus preventing the summer slide. I feel our next month of school should have a similar outcome.»
