Junior Participated in the Fall 2024 Supreme Court and My Hometown Program
In the fall, Isabelle Cox-Garleanu ’26 participated in the Fall 2024 Supreme Court and My Hometown Program. According to the Judicial Learning Center website, « This initiative engages high school students in a thorough study of the process and substantive issues of a case decided by the Supreme Court of the United States in a unique and personalized way. Participants learn how the Judicial Branch interacts with the other two branches of government and their roles and responsibilities as active citizens. A distinguishing feature of this program is the focus on Supreme Court cases that originated in the students’ hometowns and local courts. » Isabelle was one of 20 high school students selected for the program which featured a landmark First Amendment student speech case, Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier. The program began in July and continued after school throughout the fall on most Tuesdays.
In the program, Isabelle got to work with local attorney mentors, study First Amendment law, and first-person case participants and legal experts. She participated in realistic courtroom simulation activities. The site describes, « Student teams presented evidence and mock closing arguments in a trial courtroom. » For their capstone project, Isabelle conducted orgal history interviews with case participants and local and national experts. Some sections of the interviews are now permanent additions to the Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier exhibit, currently on display in the Judicial Learning Center.
A grand re-opening of the Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier exhibit is this upcoming Wednesday, February 26 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Judicial Learning Center at the Thomas F. Eagleton U.S. Courthouse. RSVP here if you would like to attend. Way to go, Isabelle!
