Senior Earns Spot on the NFHCA High School Impact Team
A huge congratulations to Lily Baker ’21 for being named to the first-ever National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) High School Impact Senior Team. A spot on this team was only given to 156 seniors whose senior seasons were influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the article, «The award honors the entirety of senior student-athletes’ careers and particularly recognizes an individual’s accomplishments on and off the pitch, distinguished leadership, and team achievement.»
As a member of this team, Baker had to meet character and athletic criteria. Congratulations, Lily!
Erb '21 Announced as Athlete of the Week
This week, Evan Erb ’21 was dubbed an «Athlete of the Week» in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He is recognized for his two Boys Singles State titles and for winning the Class 1 Championship as a freshman, was named Metro League Player of the Year, and will play for Washington and Lee University as part of their tennis program in Lexington, Virginia. Well-deserved, Evan!
Eighth Grader Earns Awards for Writing and Public Speaking
Abhinav Katyal ’25 recently participated in the North South Foundation Regional Contests for 2021. He secured 1st place in essay writing for his writing on the opioid epidemic and 3rd place in the public speaking contest. According to the organization, «North South Foundation is a non-profit organization involved in implementing educational programs for children in North America and India. The Foundation believes that this world can be a better place to live if the children of today are better prepared to be good citizens of tomorrow. Toward this end, the Foundation encourages children to endeavor to become the best they can be by giving their best. Further, while it is self-evident that all humans are created equal, it is education that is paramount to actually realizing the rights of equality including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as the Founding Fathers of this Nation envisaged more than two hundred years ago.» Way to go, Abhinav!
Rising Sophomore to Participate in Young Women's Leadership Challenge
Congratulations to Ava Moore ’24 who will be participating in the 2021-22 Young Women’s Leadership Challenge! According to the YWLC website, «The Young Women’s Leadership Challenge (YWLC) is a yearlong U.S.-based program for high school aged-girls created and managed by The Pangea Network, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women and communities in the U.S. and Kenya. YWLC is composed of a summer conference, mentoring, monthly meetings, Fall and Spring workshops, and lectures throughout the year that focus on Leadership, Social Entrepreneurship, Self-Esteem & Body Image, Local & Global Career Exploration, Service Learning, Social & Emotional intelligence, Global Issues, Conflict Resolution, Media Literacy & Human Rights, Financial Literacy, and Social Etiquette.»
Ava took a moment to share how she hopes to build her leadership skills through this opportunity: «Through an immensely challenging, yet enjoyable school year, I found it important to strive to become a better leader. Leadership is a skill that will be valuable throughout my remaining years at MICDS and the rest of my life. I am excited to participate in the YWLC program and look forward to gaining tools that will help me become a stronger and impactful leader.»
Baseball Earns 2nd at Districts
The MICDS Boys Baseball team earned second place at the Class 5 District 3 baseball Championship last Saturday, held at Clayton High School. The team finished with an overall record of 14-13 led by our new head coach Michael Kraatz. Way to go, Rams!
Boys Lacrosse Semifinal Victory and Bundy's Return
Congratulations to our Boys Lacrosse Rams for their semifinal win against Chaminade on Tuesday, with a score of 18-7. The game also marked the noticeable return of Crawford Bundy ’21 who had injured his knee in April and had undergone surgery. At the time, he didn’t think he would be playing lacrosse for four months, but with an excellent recovery, he jumped into the game and scored five goals, helping the Rams return to the State finals which take place on Friday. Girls Lacrosse Wins in Quarterfinals
In the quarterfinals matchup against Ladue on Tuesday, the Rams defeated their opponents 10-8, advancing to its ninth consecutive State semifinal with a record of 14-0. Anna Lochhead ’22 was featured in the article by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for dominating draws and contested ground balls. Read the recap of the match in the Post here.

Eighth Grade Girls Lacrosse Competes in Championship Game
The MICDS Rams 8th grade Girls Lacrosse team competed in the lacrosse championship playoff game on Sunday. Although they didn’t win, they had a ton of fun and added some shiny hardware to the trophy cabinet. Way to go, Rams!
Faculty Feature: Paul Zahller Publishes Research Article Involving MICDS Plant Science Students
Upper School Science Teacher Paul Zahller co-authored a research article that was published earlier this month by The American Biology Teacher. The article is entitled «Exploring Grass Morphology & Mutant Phenotypes Using Setaria viridis.» According to Mr. Zahller, the article covers «the Millet Mutagenesis project that MICDS plant science students have been doing for the past four years in collaboration with the Danforth International Plant Science Center. It has been an honor to work with the Danforth Center on this project and I have been incredibly proud of MICDS student contributions.»
