A Touchdown English Lesson in Middle School

With the Super Bowl quickly approaching, Middle Schoolers had a very timely English lesson on persuasive writing with English teachers Andy Kay and Darrett Thompson. Students analyzed Aristotle’s modes of persuasion (Ethos, Logos, Pathos) and then studied Super Bowl commercials to see how companies incorporated those modes of persuasion to sell their products. “This lesson fit into a larger conversation about rhetoric, rhetorical tools and how to enhance our own personal narratives,” shares Mr. Kay.

For those watching the Super Bowl this weekend, perhaps you’ll join our MICDS students in reflecting on this touchdown English lesson as you watch those many witty commercials!
