MICDS is pleased to announce that seniors Carlye Goldenberg ’17, Lexi Walsh ’17 and Annabel Warren ’17 are nominees for the Skippy Keefer Award. The Skippy Keefer Award, named in honor of a longtime athletic director at John Burroughs School and one of the founders of the Metro Women’s Athletic Association (MWAA), is given annually to a senior female athlete within the MWAA league who exemplifies the qualities of athletic participation and excellence in sportsmanship. They were honored on February 15 during a special dinner and ceremony.
Following are excerpts from the nominations prepared by MICDS for each student-athlete.
Carlye Goldenberg
A three-sport athlete in Cross Country, Swimming, and Track and Field, Carlye is known for putting herself on the line and leading by being positive. She focuses on giving her all. Assistant Track Coach Paul Zahller sums this up saying, “Carlye has set the tone for responsibility and demonstrated to younger athletes that maturity is not just knowing what the right thing to do is, but also doing it.” Making any team she is on better is a quality that all of Carlye’s coaches mention. Head Track Coach Jim Lohr says, “She is a leader who demands a lot from herself in all facets of her life, and she has been great at making all team members responsible for the success of our program.”
Lexi Walsh
Lexi has excelled at distance running becoming a standout athlete in both Cross Country and Track and Field. She is known for letting her actions speak for her and leading by example. While Lexi is known to be easy going and unassuming, she is passionate about the teams she has been on and she pushes those around her. Says Head Track Coach Jim Lohr, “Lexi challenges her comfort levels in practice to ensure a better performance, and she leads with quiet confidence.” Assistant Track Coach Paul Zahller echoes, “Lexi’s leadership over the past four years has been a cornerstone for cross country and track, and helped build our team character. Lexi is the type of student-athlete whose unassuming nature paired with competitive spirit inspires those around her.»
Annabel Warren
Annabel has left her mark on MICDS athletics by being a three-sport athlete, participating in Cross Country, Squash, and Lacrosse. Regardless of the sport, the descriptor that comes up for Annabel is selfless. She is known for being a positive force on the field, the course, and on the court. According to Head Squash Coach Robyn Williams, “Annabel does an excellent job of keeping herself and her teammates calm under pressure.” Lacrosse Coach Kate Haffenreffer, adds, “Annabel is dedicated to her sport and inclusive of each and every one of her teammates.”
