Middle schoolers heard from WWII Veteran Lt. Clifford Smith on Tuesday. Lt. Smith explained what it was like going through basic training and then moved into details from the war. He served as a B29 flight engineer in the South Pacific and flew 20 missions over Japan from bases in Saipan and Iwo Jima. His crew was shot down on the 1st mission and the plane ditched and 7 of the 11 crew members survived. They were picked up 24 hours later by the USS Spearfish and spent one month on combat patrol in Japanese waters on the submarine.
